How to choose road and gravel handlebars
Width, drop, reach, and flare — a hedged guide to the main handlebar dimensions and how they affect your fit.
Handlebars are one of the most fit-relevant parts of your bike. Small changes in width, drop, or reach noticeably change your position and comfort.
This guide is a general overview. Always confirm exact dimensions against the manufacturer's geometry sheet before buying.
The main dimensions
- Width — usually measured centre-to-centre at the drops or hoods. Should approximately match your shoulder width, though preference varies.
- Drop — vertical distance from the top of the bar to the bottom of the drops. Shallower drops are friendlier for less flexible riders.
- Reach — horizontal distance from the centre of the bar to the deepest point of the curve. Affects how far the hoods sit.
- Flare (gravel) — drops angled outwards. Gives a wider, more secure grip when descending.
Width choice
| Riding | Tendency |
|---|---|
| Aero road / racing | Narrower (often 38–40cm) |
| Endurance road | Match shoulder width |
| Gravel / adventure | Wider, often with flare |
| Touring / bikepacking | Wider with flare for stability |
Reach and drop
- Short reach + shallow drop — newer riders, less flexible riders, comfort focus.
- Long reach + deep drop — racers, riders who want a stretched position in the drops.
Compatibility
- Bar diameter — most modern bars are 31.8mm at the clamp. Older bikes may use 26mm. Stem must match.
- Material — carbon is lighter and more vibration-damping; alloy is more robust and cheaper.
- Internal cable routing — important if your stem/headset routes cables internally.
Common mistakes
- Going too narrow because of trends — comfort and breathing matter.
- Ignoring the brake lever position that the new bar will dictate.
- Forgetting cable length. A wider bar may need longer cables/hoses.
