How to choose a gravel bike

Gravel bikes cover a wide spectrum, from race-focused to bikepacking-friendly. Here's how to figure out which end you want.

"Gravel bike" covers more ground than any single category. Some are basically aero road bikes with wider tyre clearance; others are closer to drop-bar mountain bikes. Knowing where on the spectrum you want to sit is the most important decision.

This is a general overview. Geometry numbers, tyre clearances, and component specs vary widely between models — always check the actual frame's spec sheet.

The gravel spectrum

StyleTypical useKey features
Race / fastGravel racing, fast group ridesAggressive geometry, narrower tyres (40mm or less), road-style components
All-road / enduranceMixed surface long ridesRelaxed geometry, 40–45mm tyres, comfort-focused
Adventure / bikepackingMulti-day, loaded ridingSlack geometry, 45–55mm tyres, mounts everywhere, flared bars
Drop-bar MTB-adjacentSingletrack, rough trailsSuspension fork option, very wide tyres (50mm+), 1x drivetrains

Things to think about

  • Tyre clearance. This caps how aggressive your terrain can get. 40mm is fine for hardpack and light gravel; 45mm+ opens up rougher surfaces.
  • Drivetrain. 1x is mechanically simpler and quieter; 2x has tighter gear steps for varied terrain.
  • Mounts. Cargo cages, rack mounts, fender mounts — easy to overlook when buying, painful to add later.
  • Bar shape. Flared drops give better off-road control; subtle flares feel more road-like.
  • Wheel size. Most gravel bikes are 700c. Some allow 650b for wider tyres at the same overall diameter.

Common questions

Can a gravel bike be my road bike too? Yes — fit a second set of road wheels with slick tyres for tarmac days.

Do I need suspension? Most gravel riding is fine without. Suspension only makes sense for rough singletrack-style use.

Is GRX worth it over road groupsets? For dedicated gravel use, generally yes — see our GRX vs Ultegra guide.
