How to choose a bike chain

Chain compatibility is mostly about speed count and brand — here's a brief overview to avoid buying the wrong one.

Chains seem simple, but compatibility errors are common. The right chain is determined mostly by your drivetrain's speed count (10, 11, 12) and, increasingly, by brand.

This is a general overview. Always cross-check with the cassette/derailleur you're pairing it with.

The basics

  • Speed count — an 11-speed chain is narrower than a 10-speed chain. They're not interchangeable.
  • Brand — modern 12-speed Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo chains are not always cross-compatible. Older 11-speed standards were more forgiving.
  • Master link / quick link — most modern chains include one. Brand-specific in some cases.

Cross-compatibility, broadly

ChainTends to work with
Shimano 11-speedShimano, SRAM 11-speed (mostly)
Shimano 12-speed (HG+)Shimano 12-speed only
SRAM 12-speed (Eagle / AXS)SRAM-only generally
Campagnolo 12-speedCampagnolo-only
KMC 11/12-speedWide compatibility, brand-specified per model

If in doubt, match the chain brand to the cassette brand and speed count.

Quality tiers

Within a brand and speed count, more expensive chains usually offer:

  • Lower friction (often the biggest real-world difference).
  • Treated surfaces for longer life.
  • Lighter weight.

The performance gap between a mid-tier and top-tier chain is often less than the price gap.

Wear

Chains stretch as they wear. A worn chain accelerates wear on the cassette and chainrings. Use a chain wear tool (cheap, takes 30 seconds) — replace at 0.5% wear for cost-effectiveness.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the wrong speed count.
  • Mixing 12-speed brands without checking compatibility.
  • Riding a worn chain too long — replacing the chain alone is cheap; replacing the whole drivetrain is not.
