How to choose cycling shoes

Stiffness, fit, closure system, and cleat compatibility — the main decisions when buying cycling shoes.

Cycling shoes are easy to underestimate. They directly affect comfort, power transfer, and how clipless pedals feel. A well-chosen mid-tier shoe will outperform a poorly-fitting top-tier shoe.

This is a general overview. Specific fit varies brand to brand; try in person if possible.

The main decisions

Cleat compatibility

  • 3-bolt — road shoes (Shimano SPD-SL, Look Keo).
  • 2-bolt — mountain/gravel shoes (Shimano SPD).
  • 4-bolt — Speedplay-specific.

Some shoes are convertible (have both 2-bolt and 3-bolt mounting points). See our pedal guide.

Sole stiffness

Stiffer soles transfer power more efficiently but can be less comfortable for walking or long rides. Most brands publish a stiffness index, though they're not directly comparable across brands.

Closure system

TypeProsCons
VelcroCheap, simpleLess micro-adjustable
Ratchet + VelcroMid-range, good adjustmentSingle-step ratchet
Boa dial(s)Precise, mid-ride adjustableMore expensive
LacesLight, classic, even pressureSlow, no on-the-fly adjust

Fit

  • Width. Some brands run narrow, some wide. Try the brand's width chart.
  • Heel hold. Shouldn't lift when you pedal hard.
  • Toe room. Should have a thumb's width at the front.

Common mistakes

  • Buying online without trying first for an unfamiliar brand.
  • Ignoring hot-foot pressure. Insoles, shimming, or even moving cleats back can help — sometimes the shoe isn't the issue.
  • Thinking expensive = comfortable. Top-tier shoes often have less padding because they prioritise stiffness.
