A cycling computer (head unit) is your dashboard for ride data, navigation, and sensor integration. The right one depends on whether you mostly ride known routes, navigate new ones, or train with a power meter and structured workouts.
This is a general overview. Specific feature lists change frequently — always check current product pages.
The main types
| Type | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic GPS | Speed, distance, time, basic ride record | Cheap, long battery, no maps |
| Mid-range with maps | Ride + on-screen navigation | Most common, sweet spot for most riders |
| Top-tier touchscreens | Full mapping, structured workouts, group ride tracking | Pricier, shorter battery |
| Smartwatch / phone-mounted | Casual riding, runners who also cycle | Lower data depth |
What to look for
- Battery life. Longer is always better for long rides and bikepacking.
- Maps and routing. On-device maps + turn-by-turn vs simple breadcrumb.
- Sensor support. ANT+, Bluetooth, ideally both. Check power meter, HR strap, and electronic shifting compatibility.
- Mount type. Garmin-style quarter-turn mounts are nearly universal; some brands use proprietary.
- Ecosystem. Some head units integrate tightly with specific training platforms (Strava, TrainingPeaks, Wahoo, Garmin Connect, etc.).
- Screen readability. Outdoor screen quality and size matter more than indoor demos suggest.
How to think about it
- Mostly know your routes, want basic data — basic GPS is enough.
- Explore new routes often — a unit with on-device maps is worth the upgrade.
- Train structured workouts — pick a unit that integrates with your training platform.
- Race / fast group rides — battery life and mounting security matter most.
Common mistakes
- Buying for features you'll never use.
- Ignoring mount and out-front bracket — affects how visible the screen is.
- Forgetting firmware updates. Manufacturers improve features and accuracy over time.
