Presta Valve
tyres
A Presta valve is the narrower of the two main bicycle tyre valve types, common on road, gravel, and high-end mountain bikes. It has a small threaded tip with a lock nut that must be unscrewed before inflating.
Presta advantages:
- Holds higher pressures reliably.
- Narrower hole in the rim allows lighter, stronger rims.
- Most road/gravel pumps and CO2 inflators are Presta-default.
Presta considerations:
- Threaded tip can be bent if mishandled.
- Small valve cores can be replaced separately.
- Some valves are extendable for deep-section rims.
A Presta-to-Schrader adapter is sometimes useful for inflating at petrol stations (which typically have Schrader fittings).
