Groupset

drivetrain

A groupset is the collective term for the shifting and braking components of a bike, usually sold as a matched set. A typical road groupset includes:

  • Shifters / brake levers
  • Front derailleur
  • Rear derailleur
  • Crankset (crank arms + chainrings)
  • Bottom bracket (sometimes)
  • Cassette
  • Chain
  • Brakes (callipers or disc brakes + rotors)

Groupsets are tiered by performance level (e.g. Shimano 105 / Ultegra / Dura-Ace, SRAM Rival / Force / Red). Higher tiers offer lighter weight, refined shifting, and electronic options at higher prices.
