Bottom Bracket

frame

The bottom bracket (BB) is the bearing assembly that allows the crankset to rotate inside the frame's bottom bracket shell. It's one of the most important interfaces on a bike because of the load it carries and how often it sees water and grit.

There are many BB standards, broadly split into:

  • Threaded — cups thread into the frame (BSA/English, T47, Italian).
  • Press-fit — bearings or cups press directly into the frame (BB30, PressFit 86/92, BB386EVO, etc.).

Within each standard, there are variations in shell width, bearing diameter, and crank spindle diameter. Crank-to-frame compatibility often requires the right BB cup or adapter.

See dedicated entries for BB30 and T47.
