GRX
drivetrain
GRX is Shimano's gravel-specific groupset family. It shares much of its underlying technology with Shimano's road groupsets but is tuned and shaped for off-road conditions.
Key GRX features include:
- Sub-compact crank options (e.g. 48/31, 46/30) for steeper, looser climbs.
- Clutch rear derailleur to reduce chain slap and chain drops on rough terrain.
- Hood and lever ergonomics designed for a secure grip while descending.
- Wider tyre clearance assumptions in associated component design.
GRX is offered at multiple performance tiers (broadly comparable to Tiagra, 105, and Ultegra in the road lineup). Many GRX components are cross-compatible with Shimano road parts of the same generation and speed; check specifics before mixing.
